Oregon Senator Files Federal Bill S. 420 for Federal Legalization

In a move that seems to have at least some support among federal politicians, Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, filed a proposal for the legalization of cannabis under the number 420 on Thursday, February 7th, 2019. While the tactic may feel like a gimmick, S. 420 has language that could deschedule cannabis and create a framework (including federal taxes) for cannabis sales.

This move comes less than a month after another Senator from Oregon introduced a similar bill in the United States House of Representatives. H.R. 420. In the past, many other bills have also included the number 420 as a clever nod to the cannabis community.

This bill is also far from the first one introduced at a federal level since prohibition began crumbling. However, it is promising that the support for legalization of cannabis is growing among national politicians. Hopefully, the bills that finally change the law will also include some kind of justice for the communities most affected by the War on Drugs, expungement for non-violent offenders, and other compassionate, rational considerations.
