July 25th is a special day; it’s Danny Nickerson’s sixth birthday. Danny has cancer, and he told his family he wanted to get a lot of cards in the mail for his birthday. He was diagnosed last October with an inoperable brain tumor growing on his brain stem. His diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. It was found and diagnosed because it began affecting Danny’s vision. The tumor and treatments have since forced Danny to stop attending school.
The brave little boy has been through chemotherapy and radiation, and despite his struggles, maintains a positive outlook. His family put a post up on Facebook asking people to send cards. The response so far has been amazing. Their page and post has gone viral, leading to a flood of letters, cards, and birthday packages for this very sick little boy. Although his birthday is today, he has enough mail to keep his busy for some time, and will surely be thrilled to continue getting and opening cards for days to come.
If any Ladybud readers are moved by this beautiful story and want to help to turn Danny’s birthday celebration into a longer event, it’s certainly not too late for you to send a card for Danny’s birthday. At Danny’s request, cards should have his full name in them (Danny Nickerson). If you are buying a card, according to the Facebook group his family started, he loves Legos and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which is also what’s in a lot of those boxes the boys are sitting on, I’d wager). I imagine he’d also love homemade cards, too.
It is important to note that Danny is not a cannabis patient, and the cards sent to his family should offer support, not prosthelytization. They shouldn’t be anything cannabis-related in the cards or letters being sent. He’s just a little boy undergoing very serious medical procedures with the help of a very loving family.
Speaking of being a little boy, late mailers might consider making their card (or a second card) out to Danny’s best friend and little brother, whose name is Matthew. Matthew is four years old and has been a big helper throughout this process with his brother. Given that he is likely also struggling with the reality of having a very sick older brother (and the fact that there’s quite a lot of attention being paid to someone else in the house), little Matthew could also use some words of love, support and encouragement. If you intend to send them a card or letter, it should be sent to:
P.O. Box 212
Foxboro, MA 02035
The family has a blog that has been sporadically updated since Danny’s diagnosis last fall, which can be read here. They started a funding page to help offset the expenses in Danny’s medical care and the travel required for it. If you want to donate, their site can be accessed here. You can also follow them on Facebook for updates and more photos of the amazing outpouring of support they’ve received.
