Are you having a hard time enjoying the first day of 2014 because of the last few drinks you had in 2013? While there isn’t exactly any real “cure” for a hangover, science (and admittedly, personal experience) tells us these home remedies are at least somewhat effective:

#1. Water – While the last thing you may want to do is drink anything today, alcohol is very dehydrating, and replenishing your body’s natural fluids can help you feel better. Drinking two glasses of water today for every cocktail you had last night will help your body to get back on track.

#2. Bananas – Drinking alcohol can deplete your body of potassium, and bananas are a great source for this essential mineral. The natural sugar in bananas can also help regulate your blood sugar, which alcohol may throw out of whack. As an added plus, bananas taste fairly bland, something you might appreciate if you’re feeling a bit barftastic.

#3. Menudo – Not so into bland food? Menudo (the spicy Mexican soup, not the 80’s boy band) is about as far on the non-bland side of the spectrum as it gets. While science doesn’t specifically identify any of the soup’s ingredients as particularly effective at combating hangovers, some experts believe that the soup’s spiciness can distract the brain from other, less pleasant feelings…And like water, any liquid broth has some hydrating effect. If the thought of eating beef stomach creeps you out, try some spicy Pho, a traditional Vietnamese hangover remedy, instead.

#4. Green Tea – There’s something we find soothing about a steaming cup of green tea, but it’s probably the caffeine content than makes it an effective hangover remedy. Caffeine is a natural anti-inflammatory, so it can help with that throbbing headache. Just don’t drink too much tea/coffee/soda, or you’ll end up wired as well as hung over.

#5 Medical Marijuana – Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know by now that cannabis is extremely effective at treating nausea and vomiting, and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Given the choice, we recommend Sativa-dominant strains known for their anti-emitic properties, such as Strawberry Cough.

And speaking of marijuana, we’re looking forward to New Year’s eve 2014 in Washington and Colorado, where partiers will be able to get a legal buzz on without alcohol…And that will make for a happier, healthier, hangover-free New Year’s Day 2015.
