A special reading of A Question of Compassion, the last (unfinished) book by writer and activist Peter McWilliams, debuted on Youtube Christmas day. The Youtube channel We Remember Peter also offers additional videos featuring a wide cast of activists reading excerpts from Peter’s writings.
Peter McWilliams was a self-published, New York Times best-selling author of many different types of works, ranging from self-help to poetry to “how to” books that touched the hearts and minds of readers across the world. A Question of Compassion details Peter’s exploration of medical marijuana in his battles with both cancer and AIDS.
In the mid 1990’s, Peter started having health problems, and in 1996 he was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma. In 1997, he was arrested for possession and growing of cannabis and was released on $250,000 bail along with the “condition that he not use marijuana.”
Peter McWilliams died at home on June 14th, 2000 due to complications from non-hodgkins lymphoma and AIDS. He died before he was able to complete his trial or A Question of Compassion.
Thirteen years after his death, Peter’s work is still influencing people all across the world. Every year at Seattle Hempfest, the world’s largest Cannabis rally, the “Peter McWilliams Stage” hosts hundreds of speakers, musicians and artists from all around the world, all bringing the same message Peter spoke about: freedom and love. And the videos readings on the We Remember Peter youtube channel continue to expose new audiences to Peter’s words of wisdom.
You can check out more of Peter’s work at your local library or grab a copy of one of his books from the website PeterMcWilliams.org. The website also offers Peter McWilliams t-shirts and sweatshirts, with proceeds going to a wonderful woman with a very kind heart who maintains the site and continues to spread Peter’s message of love and hope.
