Five Beauty Essentials

As a teenager, I mistakenly thought makeup was about caking on thick liquid foundations and whole sticks of eyeliner on each eyelid. The cheaper the makeup the more you could buy! I was a Wet N’ Wild whore. What I didn’t know then is cheap makeup destroys your skin and creates a cycle where you need to continue caking on thick makeup to cover your tortured crater-pores and minefield of zits. My beauty regimen now consists of natural skin-care, drinking lots of water, and light natural makeup—because when you take care of your skin there is far less to cover up.

Bliss® No Zit Sherlock Complete Acne System

I have never had much acne, but of course I had a period of hormonal teenage breakouts when I was younger. These days, I seem to only get zits when I party too much. This could be attributed to age and genetics but I think Bliss® No Zit Sherlock may play an essential part in why my skin looks great. It is light, clean and fragrance-free. The three-part system (cleanser/toner, correcting serum, oil-control moisturizer) has 2% salicylic acid, the most common acne-fighting ingredient and probiotics. What it doesn’t have—parabens, phthalates, fragrances, dyes and GMOs

Laura Mercier® Flawless Skin Face Polish Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Face Polish

This face polish has become a staple in my routine, and while it is safe to use everyday, I use it once a week (or so) and is what I credit for making my face feel like a baby’s ass. Also completely natural and fragrance-free, this gentle exfoliator is designed to hydrate your skin while sloughing off dead skin cells and smoothing impurities. It’s a tad expensive but so, so worth it.

41-fjdbl-SL._SL246_SX190_CR0,0,190,246_100% Pure™ Espresso Bean Eye Cream

I discovered this product years ago when I was bartending. The bar-wench life is hard on your face. Often times, you are drinking and sweating for ten hours or more and staying up until the wee hours of the morning. A couple dabs of 100% Pure™ Espresso Bean Eye Cream takes the sagging bags under your eyes and through the power of caffeine sucks them back up into your sockets so you have lithe, well-rested eyes. As the name says, every product in this line (I am a fan of ALL of their products) is natural, naturally fragranced, vegan, gluten-free, no GMOs, etc. Additionally, this cream comes in Cucumber as well for hydration, which provides great wrinkle prevention. I have both and tend to use the Cucumber daily and the Espresso as needed.

Benefit® POREfessional PRO Balm porefessional

After washing and exfoliating my face and hydrating my eyes, I use a skin-primer. I have bounced around a bit on brands but have settled on this incredible primer. It is oil-free, natural and has visibly reduced my pores. I smooth a small amount all over my face and it leaves my skin feeling matte and silky, which in turn means I need to use an incredibly minute amount of natural mineral powder foundation (I use Bare Essentials). This is truly my secret weapon—makeup or not, the skin on my face has become incredibly supple, soft, and even.

s980995-main-hero BUXOM Big & Healthy™ Lip Polish

I ALWAYS have at least one tube of this in my purse without fail. My favorite shade is “Dolly” although you will find Buxom has really created an incredible range of colors to match your face. It is thick, but not too thick that hair and pollen get stuck to your lips on a windy day. It is a lip “plumper” and it gives you a fresh tingle while supposedly making your lips look bigger and more supple. I don’t know much about that but I do know it doesn’t chap your lips, the color is subtle and it just looks and feels damn good on my lips.
